Paul McBeth Foundation Announces Project 4.4: Bringing Disc Golf to Bulgaria

Posted Tue, Jun 11, 2024 in Latest News

The Paul McBeth Foundation (PMF) is proud to announce its latest international project, which will result in the installation of Bulgaria's first permanent disc golf course. This landmark installation will be situated in Ezero Park, located in the beautiful coastal city of Burgas, which is the fourth-largest city in the country. Known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning Black Sea coastline, Burgas is an ideal location for this exciting new addition to the local sports and recreation scene.

This course marks a significant expansion of PMF's efforts in Eastern Europe, building on the success of its previous project in Montenegro. The installation, which PMF calls Project 4.4 for its fourth project in the foundation's fourth year of existence, aims to capitalize on the growing enthusiasm for disc golf in Bulgaria, where a dedicated group of local players have already been fostering a love for the sport by setting up temporary baskets in city parks for weekly leagues.

"We're incredibly excited to bring disc golf to Burgas," said Paul McBeth, six-time PDGA World Champion and founder of PMF. "This project not only introduces a new recreational activity to the community but also builds on the strong foundation laid by local enthusiasts. With the support of the city government and our partners, we believe this course will become a central hub for disc golf in Bulgaria."

The new course will feature nine permanent baskets complete with tee signs, tee pads, and a practice area. This setup is designed to cater to disc golfers of all skill levels, providing a fun and challenging environment for beginners and seasoned players alike. Avery Jenkins, a renowned course designer and world-champion professional disc golfer, will oversee the design and installation of the course, ensuring it meets the highest standards of playability and enjoyment.

Installation has been scheduled for August 2024, with the full support and approval of Manol Todorov, the Deputy Mayor of Sport and Tourism for Burgas. This backing from the local government highlights the project's potential impact and the city's commitment to expanding recreational opportunities for its residents.

Bozhidar (Bobby) Georgiev, the project driver, has been instrumental in garnering local support and enthusiasm for disc golf. His efforts, along with the energy of the local community, promise to make this project a resounding success.

"When we learned that PMF would build the first disc golf course in Burgas, Bulgaria, it took us back to when we first discovered and fell in love with the sport,” Georgiev said. "We're excited to share our passion and help grow disc golf here so more people can experience it.”

The project's gold partner, DiscGolfPark, will provide the necessary equipment, including baskets, discs, and educational materials. This partnership ensures that the course will be equipped with top-quality gear that will contribute to a premium disc golf experience. Additionally, PDGA Europe will be coming alongside this project to continue their expansion efforts across Europe.

In a sign of early success, the local government in Burgas is already looking to purchase additional baskets from DiscGolfPark, anticipating rapid growth and expansion of the sport within the region. This proactive approach underscores the project's potential to spark a disc golf movement throughout Bulgaria.
